Sodium chloride is an inorganic ionic compound with the chemical formula NaCl. It is a colorless cubic crystal or fine crystalline powder with a salty taste. It looks like white crystals, and its source is mainly sea water, which is the main component of table salt. Easily soluble in water and glycerol, slightly soluble in ethanol and liquid ammonia; insoluble in concentrated hydrochloric acid. Impure sodium chloride deliquesces in the air. The stability is relatively good, and its aqueous solution is neutral.

Application areas


1. When electrolyzing sodium chloride aqueous solution, hydrogen and chlorine will be produced. Chlorine is widely used in the chemical industry and can be used to synthesize polyvinyl chloride, pesticides, hydrochloric acid, etc.

2. Preparation of metallic sodium by Dans method: Preparation of metallic sodium by electrolysis of a mixture of molten sodium chloride and calcium chloride. Calcium chloride is used as a flux to reduce the melting point of sodium chloride to below 700°C. Calcium is less reducing than sodium and does not introduce impurities.

3. Sodium chloride is necessary for many biological reactions. For example, many solution formulas in molecular biology experiments contain sodium chloride, and most bacterial culture media contain sodium chloride. It is also the raw material for making soda ash using the ammonia-alkali method.

4. In the inorganic and organic industries, it is used as raw material for manufacturing caustic soda, chlorate, hypochlorite, bleaching powder, refrigerant in refrigeration system, raw material for organic synthesis and salting out agent. Used as heat treatment agent in the steel industry. The high-temperature heat source is mixed with potassium chloride, barium chloride, etc. to form a salt bath, which can be used as a heating medium to maintain the temperature between 820 and 960°C. In addition, it is also used in glass, dye, metallurgy and other industries.

Chloride ions are also found mainly in extracellular fluid. The main physiological functions of sodium ions and chloride ions are:

(2) Participate in the regulation of acid-base balance in the body;
